Guwahati: Guwahati, the economic nerve-centre of the Northeastern region, has recently experienced a surge in the popularity of homestays, which offer travellers from across India and beyond a warm and homely experience. These homestays are an attractive option, particularly for the younger generation, as they provide an ideal space for family vacations, birthday parties, gatherings with friends, and work-related meetings.

According to recent reports, Assam is experiencing an unemployment rate of 6.1%. In response to this challenge, a growing number of young entrepreneurs in the state have taken innovative steps to address the issue and create opportunities for themselves and others. Many young entrepreneurs have launched their own Airbnb properties, transforming their homes into lucrative rental spaces for tourists and travelers. This initiative not only provides a source of income for these individuals but also stimulates local tourism and promotes economic growth within their communities.

Business North East spoke with local entrepreneurs who have found success in the burgeoning Airbnb market. Aditi Choudhury, the owner of four Airbnb units in Bhangagarh and Lachit Nagar areas, shared her insights on running these properties for nearly three years.

"Besides the business aspect, I am an avid traveler who has explored 42 countries," Aditi said. "The push to set up my Airbnbs came from the ideas and experiences I gathered in my travel diaries. I've stayed in over 50-60 Airbnbs across various regions, from European countries to backpacking trips in Africa and the Philippines. Unlike traditional hotels, Airbnbs offer a wholesome, self-dependent stay where guests can cook their own food and feel at home. This concept struck me during my travels, inspiring me to bring it to Guwahati."

When asked if running an Airbnb is profitable, Aditi said, "Yes, it is. In Guwahati, the Airbnb concept is slightly different, attracting a mix of guests, including those planning parties. I prefer a traditional Airbnb model. However,  we get various types of guests in our units. My Airbnb business yields a profit margin of 30 to 40 percent."

Another Airbnb owner, who owns two units, shared his experience with Business North East. "I had two empty units, and instead of renting them out traditionally, I decided to open Airbnbs. The profit is significant, especially when the units are fully booked every day."

Most of these designed to provide a home-like atmosphere, equipped with all the essentials that one might need. Guests can enjoy facilities like a living room, kitchen, and balcony, allowing them to cook their meals, relax, and enjoy their stay in a private space. This makes homestays an excellent choice for those looking for a comfortable and affordable alternative to traditional hotels.

While hotels can be expensive, they also often lack the personal touch and homey feel that homestays offer. In contrast, platforms like Airbnb provide spacious accommodations at affordable prices, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious travellers.

The homely environment of these stays is particularly appealing to those who miss the comfort of their own homes while travelling. The ability to cook meals in a private kitchen, relax in a cosy living room, and enjoy the view from a balcony are some of the many perks that make homestays a preferred choice. Moreover, the personal touch provided by local hosts often enhances the overall experience, offering insights into the local culture and lifestyle.

In recent years, the demand for Airbnb accommodations in Guwahati has skyrocketed through the roof, with listings available in almost all areas of the city. And it seems like this business model is here to stay.
