The inauguration of the Darranga International Check Post (ICP) connecting Bhutan-Assam represents a crucial achievement in enhancing the relationship between the two regions, creating opportunities for a flourishing period of tourism, cultural interaction, and reciprocal development. For many years, eastern Bhutan and Assam have maintained robust historical and familial links, with individuals crossing the border for trade, marriage, and social relations. Nonetheless, this connection via the Darranga ICP will strengthen these ties, fostering new prospects for cross-border tourism and enhancing cultural comprehension.
A key project in the increasing tourism interaction between Assam and Bhutan is Bhutan’s Rhododendron Week, an event scheduled to occur in the picturesque highland areas of the Brokpa community in Bhutan’s eastern highlands. Renowned for their beautiful rhododendron flowers, these areas provide a distinctive and engaging experience for both domestic and foreign visitors. The Rhododendron Week seeks to highlight both the natural splendour of Bhutan and its vibrant cultural heritage, providing visitors a chance to engage with the native communities residing in this area.

During an exclusive interview with Business North East (BNE), the Director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, Damcho Rinzin, highlighted the significance of Rhododendron Week in promoting Bhutan’s cultural and natural heritage.
“As visitors come from Assam and other parts of India to explore the event, they will experience the unique combination of traditions, culture, and nature that Bhutan offer. It is a beautiful way to foster stronger relationships through tourism,” Damcho Rinzin said.
As tourists gain easier access to Bhutan, events like Rhododendron Week can help accelerate cross-border tourism, promote collaboration and unite communities. The cultural resemblances between Assam and Bhutan further strengthen the connection between the two areas. Assam has numerous cultural similarities with Bhutan - tea traditions, classical dance styles, and celebrations like Bihu. Both areas appreciate tradition, spirituality, and community.
By promoting exchanges, whether through art, music, or cuisine, the two regions can establish avenues for cultural enhancement and shared respect. Bhutan and Assam will combine these cultural experiences within their tourism products, developing customized travel packages enabling visitors to experience the finest aspects of both regions. Sustainability in tourism has been a central emphasis for both administrations.
Damcho Rinzin states that Bhutan has historically been a leader in advancing eco-friendly tourism initiatives, and this dedication also applies to cross-border tourism. Bhutan government promotes responsible tourism aimed at maintaining natural beauty and cultural authenticity. This model is being adopted in the framework of Assam’s tourism initiatives, as both areas work together to guarantee that the surge of visitors does not negatively impact their distinct ecosystems or cultural traditions. Additionally, Damcho Rinzin revealed that Assam and Bhutan are partnering to enhance the sustainable tourism infrastructure.
"Road connectivity is being enhanced to ensure that tourists can travel comfortably between the two regions. The hospitality sector is also being upgraded, with hotels, homestays, and local businesses receiving attention to meet the growing demand," Damcho Rinzin told BNE.
Additionally, customized travel packages are designed to provide tourists with an experience that covers both Assam and Bhutan. These advancements will draw in visitors and provide a smooth and rewarding experience for those who explore this newly reachable border area," he noted.
From the renowned Kaziranga National Park and historical temples of Assam to Bhutan’s tranquil monasteries and impressive Tawang Monastery, a vast opportunity lies for cross-border tourism. Travellers now enjoy the unique chance to discover both areas in one journey, allowing for easier immersion in the cultural and natural variety of the borderlands.
"The opening of the Darranga ICP represents more than just a physical gateway. It symbolizes the deepening friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and Assam. The border was once a barrier but is now a bridge, linking two regions with rich histories, cultures, and landscapes. Through tourism, both regions can celebrate their shared heritage and respect traditions," he added.
Both Bhutan and Assam are keen on further cultivating this emerging partnership. With the increase in cross-border tourism, local communities on either side will reap the economic advantages. Local enterprises might benefit from the heightened influx of tourists, maintaining and showcasing both cultural and natural resources.
