Guwahati: The inclusion of the Bharatiya Knowledge System (BKS) in college syllabi is likely to be discussed at an upcoming meeting of vice-chancellors in Guwahati this month.

Around 60 university vice-chancellors from the ‘East Zone’ are expected to participate at the meet which will be held at the Royal Global University in Guwahati on November 21-22. The meeting, which is being organized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), will be attended by Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria as well as two cabinet ministers from the state.

“People who come from outside can see how the university system here is growing”, RGU Vice Chancellor S P Singh said. The theme of this year’s meeting is ‘Integrating Bharatiya Knowledge System with Higher Education’. Additionally, there will be many other sub-themes which will also be discussed.

“In Assam, the number of private universities has been growing gradually”, Singh told Business North East. “With immense hard work, these universities are now coming into the limelight. In the future, the fees of all the universities should become equal so that all can afford it”, he added.

During the technical sessions, the usage of the Bhartiya-based approach for teaching learning for holistic development, the Bharatiya knowledge system in sustainable development, and embedding the Bharatiya knowledge system for futuristic education will be deliberated upon.

A senior official said that the inclusion of the Bharatiya Knowledge System (BKS) in the present education system will not make education expensive but more “holistic, integrated, down to earth, and sustainable.”

According to the organizers, the meeting is expected to deliberate on the issues “keeping in view the global trends, national preparedness, and regional requirements in consonance with institutional readiness.”

Some “tangible resolutions” containing the measures to be adopted by the government, Chancellors, vice chancellors, and other university functionaries will be drawn from the deliberations of the meeting. The solutions will be discussed in an annual meeting and final recommendations will be sent to government ministries for consideration.

Based on the recommendations of the annual meeting, a university action plan on integrating the BKS with higher education will be prepared which will be a handy guide for institutions of the country. Based on these meetings, a policy document will also be made and will be presented to the government of India.
