Guwahati: Chief airport officer of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport (LGBIA) Utpal Baruah on July 2 resigned on "moral grounds" following charges of unethical conduct in pubs and hotels by three senior officers.

The head office denied the charges. Some anonymous writers had also sent letters to the head office of the Adani Group informing them of these incidents, according to reports.

The CAO is currently serving the notice period. Sources refused to mention names of officers involved as it was alleged that one person in the project was getting favours from contractor. He was removed with other two.

The development comes as a new international terminal is being constructed for Guwahati Airport at a cost of over Rs 2,000 crore, and is expected to be ready by mid-2025.

The incoming CAO, Ashwin Noronha, has served at Qatar Airways Group, KPMG, and Zurich Airports in India.
The Guwahati Airport processed over five lakh passengers in May 2024, a 15 percent increase from the corresponding month in 2023.

The airport is expected to undergo significant changes to manage growth and ensure passenger satisfaction.

The Adani group had taken over the management, operation, and development of Guwahati Airport on October 8, 2021.
