The BJP-led government in Assam is likely to release a complied 'land bank’ for industrial use with an aim to attract global investors who were shying away from the state with the unavailability of land being one of the prime reasons for lack of investments.

The state’s industry department has nearly complied with the land banks of all the districts of the state which were under government control.

The data has been compiled using feedback received from district commissioners officers of various districts across the state.

During the compilation, it was found that many industrial lands are now lying unused with the revenue department as many public sector companies closed their shutters. These lands are being collated together to form a land bank, a revenue department official said.

The industries department has identified around 2,100 bighas of land lying unused and which once belonged to the now-defunct public sector companies and mills. It wants to make these lands part of the ‘land bank’ and make them available for industry.

Non-availability of land had been the “single largest” issue impeding investments in Assam.

“If the land banks are compiled and could be presented to investors then it makes it easier for them to make a decision, large tracts of lands are the first prerequisite for setting up big industries,” added the official.

The industry associations feel that even unused agricultural land should be converted to industrial land in Assam.

In fact, the Assam government is also likely to come up with an agriculture policy which will demarcate industrial land from agricultural land.
