New Delhi :On Thursday, the government sanctioned the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oilseeds, allocating Rs 10,103 crore to achieve self-sufficiency in cooking oils in India. More than half of India's yearly edible oil demand is met through imports.
The government announced on social media platform X that the Cabinet has given approval to the National Mission on Edible Oils ' Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) for the period of 2024-25 to 2030-31 with a budget of Rs 10,103 crore, with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in oilseed production in India within the next 7 years.
The government plans to raise primary oilseed production from 39 million tonnes in 2022-23 to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31, as stated by the mission. "It aims to increase oilseed cultivation by another 40 lakh hectares," it further stated. India brings in palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, and soyabean oil from Brazil and Argentina. The primary sources of sunflower are Russia and Ukraine.
