Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is giving consumers food for thought by making them aware of hygiene at roadside stalls and restaurants in the city.

GMC’s new radar has created awareness among foodies to consider hygiene before indulging in their favourite dishes. In fact, it has closed down a number of shops as those were not following hygiene standards.

Recently, GMC also inspected Khao Gully, a popular hangout, and penalised it for not maintaining hygiene conditions. Nonetheless, several eateries are continuing business without paying much attention to hygienic conditions.

Many times, these sites do not maintain any hygiene conditions. Even consumers least are bothered about it. A number of stalls are selling cooked food like chapati, rice and curry on the street without covering the food properly.

However, the good news is that the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has taken the initiative to create an example of 100 food streets in 100 districts across the country.

The initiative is being taken up as a pilot project to create an example for other such streets to come up across the country for ensuring hygienic and safe food practices.
