Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn has strengthened its footprint in India with a fresh investment of 1.5 billion Dollars (approx. ₹712,500 crore), signaling its continued push to diversify operations beyond China. The investment, routed through its Singapore-based subsidiary, was used to acquire 12.7 billion shares in its Indian unit, Yuzhan Technology India, which manufactures smartphone components in Tamil Nadu and plays a key role in Apple's iPhone supply chain.

The move adds momentum to India’s growing semiconductor ambitions. With five semiconductor projects already underway, the latest unit from Foxconn brings the total to six facilities currently in the pipeline.

In a major development, Foxconn has also received the green light from the Indian government to set up a semiconductor manufacturing facility near Noida airport. This ₹3,700 crore project is a joint venture with the HCL Group and will focus on the production of display driver chips used in smartphones, laptops, automotive electronics, and other devices. The facility is expected to process 20,000 wafers and churn out up to 36 million chips every month.

India’s semiconductor push is backed by robust infrastructure development, government support, and strong academic collaboration. Over 270 educational institutions and 70 startups are actively engaged in advanced chip design efforts. According to officials, 20 chips designed by Indian students have already been completed at the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.

Global players like Applied Materials and Lam Research have recently initiated operations in India, while key industry suppliers such as Merck, Linde, Air Liquide, and Inox are expanding their presence to support the burgeoning semiconductor ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Foxconn’s massive 2.56 billion dollars (approx. ₹721,000 crore) iPhone assembly plant in Devanahalli, Karnataka, continues to progress steadily. Located across Doddagollahalli and Chapparadahalli villages, just 34 km from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, the 300-acre site is a critical component of Apple’s global supply chain shift.

The first phase of the Karnataka project (2023–24) saw an investment of around ₹73,000 crore, with a similar amount planned for phase two (2026–27). Foxconn aims to manufacture approximately 100,000 iPhones at the facility by December 2025. Worker dormitories, a staple of Foxconn’s operating model, are currently under construction on-site.

Despite geopolitical remarks, including former U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement opposing Apple’s manufacturing shift to India, Apple CEO Tim Cook has reaffirmed the company's commitment. Cook recently said most iPhones sold in the U.S. will soon be made in India—an ambition clearly reflected in the scale of Foxconn’s operations.

The developments mark a significant leap for India as it seeks to become a global electronics manufacturing and semiconductor hub.
