India to Introduce Tea Tasting Certification Courses to Boost Industry and Tourism

NEW DELHI: In a move aimed at skilling the youth, promoting tea literacy, and bolstering tea tourism, the Tea Board of India is exploring the launch of certification courses in tea tasting. This announcement came on International Tea Day, as stated by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal.

Barthwal highlighted that the Tea Board is actively working towards establishing a dedicated center for these tea tasting certification courses within the country. He emphasized that such an initiative would not only equip young professionals with specialized skills but also significantly contribute to the growth of tea tourism.

Tea tasting is recognized as a crucial and specialized skill within the industry, and these structured training programs are expected to standardize tasting practices. Upon completion, participants will receive a recognized qualification, opening up new avenues for employment and professional development.

India's tea exports have shown a positive trend, increasing from $830 million in FY24 to $920 million in FY25. Domestically, approximately 81% of the tea produced in India is consumed. The major tea-producing states in the country include Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Renowned varieties of Indian tea include Darjeeling, Assam, Nilgiri, and Kangra.
