Nagaon: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck Nagaon district in Assam today at 4:30pm, sending tremors across nearby regions. Meteorological Department  sources informed Business North East that according to the  National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake, pinpointing the epicentre at latitude 26.12°N and longitude 92.54°E at a depth of 25 kilometres.

Residents in and around Nagaon felt the tremors, causing alarm, although no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.
The Northeast region, known for its seismic activity, frequently experiences earthquakes due to the complex tectonic plate interactions in the area. According to the Meteorological Department, today's earthquake is a reminder of the region’s vulnerability.

In recent years, the region has witnessed several significant quakes, including a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on November 10, 2022, near Charu village, West Siang in Arunachal Pradesh, at a shallow depth of 10 km. This quake was felt across a large area, including Itanagar and Guwahati. More recently, on April 9, 2023, a perceptible earthquake of magnitude 5.2 struck Goalpara district in Assam, with its epicenter near Lakhipur sub-division at a depth of 14 km.
The constant seismic activity in the Northeast underscores the need for preparedness in the region.
