Domestic air traffic rises 7.3 pc to 1.29 crore on annual basis in July

New Delhi: Official data released on Monday revealed that Indian airlines transported over 1.29 crore passengers in July, marking a growth of over 7.3 pc compared to the same period last year. Yet, the number of people flying in July was less than the 1.32 crore passengers transported by domestic airlines in June.

In July, IndiGo kept its lead in domestic air traffic with a market share of 62 per cent, while Air India saw its market share decrease to 14.3 per cent. According to the data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Vistara's domestic market share rose to 10 per cent in the previous month, while AIX Connect and SpiceJet saw decreases to 4.5 per cent and 3.1 per cent, respectively.

DGCA reported that domestic airlines transported 923.35 lakh passengers from January to July 2024, showing a 4.70 pc yearly increase and a 7.33 pc monthly increase compared to the same period in the previous year when 881.94 lakh passengers were carried. Domestic air traffic in July was 129.87 lakh, slightly lower than June's 132.06 lakh but higher than July 2023's 121 lakh.

The information indicated that 1,114 passengers were refused boarding and airlines provided Rs 112.71 lakh for compensation and amenities. A total of 1,54,770 passengers were impacted by cancellations, with airlines spending Rs 110.59 lakh for compensation and amenities.

Flight delays affected 3,20,302 passengers in July, leading airlines to spend Rs 341.05 lakh on assistance. The airlines experienced a cancellation rate of 1.90 per cent last month. In July 2024, the scheduled domestic airlines received a grand total of 1,097 complaints related to passengers. The quantity of grievances per stated period has increased.
