Two-Day State Convention On Disaster Management Held At Gauhati University

Guwahati: A two-day state convention titled ‘Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future’ commenced on 10 December 2024 at Gauhati University, organized by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The event focuses on equipping youth and community volunteers with disaster risk management skills and fostering resilience at the grassroots level.

Assam’s Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Nandita Gorlosa, inaugurated the convention, stressing the significance of sustainable living and disaster preparedness. She urged the community to learn from past disasters to enhance the protection of humans, animals, and ecosystems.


The convention featured an exhibition showcasing disaster management initiatives by various stakeholders, volunteers, and students. Minister Gorlosa also launched a Coffee Table Book titled Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future.

ASDMA Chief Executive Officer Gyanendra Dev Tripathi emphasized the need to empower young responders through programs like Aapda Mitra, Circle Level Quick Response Teams (CQRTs), and disaster preparedness training in schools. He highlighted the role of trained youth as first responders and community change agents during emergencies.

District project officers, field officers, top-performing Aapda Mitra volunteers, and CQRT representatives attended the event. Representatives from 10 states, including Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, and Sikkim, shared best practices and innovative disaster management models.

Assam’s Minister of Revenue & Disaster Management, Keshab Mahanta later addressed the attendees and flagged off a mock drill exercise conducted by the NDRF, SDRF, and Fire & Emergency Services.

The convention aims to build a strong foundation for community-based disaster risk management through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building.
