Shillong: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Sunday inaugurated a cluster development fund project at Lum Symper, an iconic picnic spot located some 48km from the capital Shillong in East Khasi Hills.
Lyngdoh emphasized the importance of sustainable development and the importance of the environment for indigenous tribes. "There is no shortcut for development and cooperation with society is crucial for development," he said.
He also criticized the idea of turning villages like Sohra into museums, and claimed they would only serve to increase the economic divide between the rich and the poor and increase landlessness. Lyngdoh urged the youth to remember that the earth they live on doesn't belong to them, but they need to take care of it and hand it over to their children.
The minister was joined by local MLA Ollan Suin and several key officials. He assured the local officials that all would work together to strengthen and preserve the place.
