Guwahati: A zonal-level workshop on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was organized in Guwahati for officers and officials of the North East Zone.
The workshop, which took place on a Monday, was dedicated to exploring the significance of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in policymaking, monetary decisions, and research.
The event drew participation from representatives of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in Delhi, alongside senior officers from the Guwahati Zonal Office. Attendees hailed from various regional offices across the North East Zone, including locations like Shillong, Gangtok, Agartala, Itanagar, Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Imphal, Kohima, and Aizawl.
During the workshop, Director General Kal Singh underlined the paramount importance of CPI data in governmental, central banking, and research activities. Additional Director General N K Santoshi highlighted CPI's pivotal role within macroeconomics, particularly in shaping decisions related to monetary policies. Santoshi also underscored the crucial need to comprehend the fundamental principles and concepts underpinning CPI data to ensure accurate outcomes from market surveys.
Jose Kurian, the Director of the Field Operations Division (FOD) at the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in New Delhi, provided comprehensive insights into the key concepts and definitions of the Consumer Price Index. He informed participants about nationwide consumer price index surveys that covered a wide range of markets and products, including 1,432 town markets and 1,471 rural markets.
The Field Operations Division (FOD) of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) has been consistently conducting nationwide sample surveys since its inception in 1950. These surveys span various domains such as Socio-Economic, Industrial, Agricultural, and price statistics, including both CPI and WPI. NSSO (FOD) conducts surveys on diverse subjects within predefined time frames referred to as rounds, effectively meeting the data requirements of its stakeholders.
