New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved airport projects in Bagdogra, West Bengal, and Bihta, Bihar, with a total investment of approximately ₹2,962 crore, as part of its ongoing infrastructure development efforts. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decisions during a briefing, detailing the construction of a new civil enclave at Bagdogra airport, costing ₹1,549 crore, and another at Bihta, costing ₹1,413 crore.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made these decisions. According to an official statement, the planned terminal building at Bagdogra's new civil enclave will span 70,390 square meters, accommodating 3,000 passengers during peak hours and handling up to 10 million passengers annually.

The project will also include the construction of a new apron with space for 10 A-321 type aircraft, two taxiways, and multi-level parking facilities. These developments aim to enhance the airport's efficiency and passenger experience, establishing Bagdogra as a significant air travel hub in the region.

Similarly, the new civil enclave at Bihta will address the anticipated overcrowding at Patna airport. The upcoming terminal building at Bihta will cover 66,000 square meters, with the capacity to serve 3,000 peak-hour passengers and 50 lakh passengers annually. This capacity can be expanded to accommodate a total of 1 crore passengers as needed.

These projects are strategic responses to the growing demand for air travel in the region and aim to significantly boost the infrastructure in West Bengal and Bihar.
