Guwahati: The number of branded hotel rooms in Northeast India rose more than twofold within eight years as several big players have made a foray into the region, The Hindu Business Line reported, citing data from consultancy firm Hotelivate.
According to Hotelivate, the region had 540 rooms across seven branded hotels in FY 2015. The number rose significantly – to 1,350 rooms in 17 hotels – by the FY 23. Forty four perfect of these are located in Guwahati, the financial nerve centre of the Northeastern region. Another 25% of the branded luxury rooms are located in Sikkim capital Gangtok, a major tourist destination in the country.
Data also showed that occupancy in these branded rooms rose from 47 percent to 54 percent in the same period. The room rates also rose significantly by 65% to Rs 5,800 in the same period.
With financial support from state government, several major national and international chains are eyeing to set up more luxury establishments in the region.
This month alone, there were two major developments related to the hotel sector in the Northeast.
On December 5, the luxury brand announced the signing of a management agreement for a 140-room hotel in Ranka in Sikkim, marking its foray into Northeast India. Owned by Gangtok-based SIBIN Group, The Leela's Sikkim project will be located approximately 10 kilometers from the capital city, on a 17-acre plot overlooking Gangtok Hill.
On December 23, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the Vivanta Tawang, a luxury hotel in the frontier state’s tourism hotspot that will offer a plethora of world-class services to visitors.
Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Khandu also posted a series of pictures showing facilities that can be availed at the new hotel - from a gym to a swimming pool, to an expansive dining area.
