Guwahati: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently organised an event dubbed "Standards Carnival" on its 78th Foundation Day to drive quality and awareness of standardisation. The event in Guwahati brought industry leaders, schools, and common masses together with great fervour towards a vibrant celebration.
"This is a mix of culture, quality, and standardisation. This is where industry meets culture, culture meets schools, and standards meet quality. Northeast India must be proud to have such a program as this," Shouvik Chanda, Director & Head of BIS Guwahati, told Pankhi Sarma in an exclusive interview with Business North East (BNE), bringing out the significance of the event and his plans for the future.
This unique initiative saw a diverse pool of stakeholders cut across industries, schools, and the general public, reinforcing that standards are a foundation for progress. At the same time, school-going students and members of the general public added some flavour to the event with their food stalls, handicraft exhibitions, and ingenious scientific projects.
"School students are our future generation. If we educate them about the importance of quality and standardisation from an early age, then we are providing a base for excellence in the future," Chanda explained.
"With a strong intent on shaping minds, the whole program was school-inclusive as well, keeping in mind participation from Kendriya Vidyalayas. Our future generation constitutes the school student. If the quality and its associated word "standardisation" are taught today, then an excellent future shall be built out," he added.
"This whole process is about fixing the importance of quality in future leaders," noted Chanda. BIS had organised the Standards Carnival, marking its 78th year of existence, an event to stress its role in promoting quality and standardisation. "This is the place where quality and standardisation meet the future of India," he said.
In this regard, the event helped foster interactions between the industries and the public, thus helping in showcasing relevance to real life as well.
Standards came alive in daily life through participation from various stakeholders, which confirmed the importance of standards in one's life. It was interesting to see students bridge the gap between theoretical education and application at the stalls showcasing quality practices.

BIS plans to take its awareness programmes to key Northeastern locations, like Shillong and other prime cities. Here, it plans to educate cross-sections of people about quality and standardisation.
"This event marks the beginning of a new chapter. We are committed to organising more such programs, ensuring that the message of quality and standardisation resonates across communities. The BIS Standards Carnival has undoubtedly set a high benchmark, paving the way for enhanced public awareness and a stronger focus on quality in Northeast India," the Director & Head of BIS Guwahati said during the BNE interview.
