Guwahati: The Brahmaputra Board recently organised an Awareness Walkathon cum Human Chain on March 26 as part of the Swachhata Pakhwada 2025 initiative. Held at the Brahmaputra Board premises in Guwahati's Basistha, the event promoted cleanliness and hygiene awareness among the public.

Brahmaputra Board Chairman, Ranbir Singh and Guwahati Municipal Corporation Councillor, Ashish Bharali graced the program among other participants from various organisations, local communities, and government officials, who actively took part in the walkathon, followed by the formation of a human chain to symbolise collective commitment toward a cleaner environment.

Business North East (BNE) spoke to Ranbir Singh, who highlighted the significance of Swachhata Pakhwada. Singh described it as a fortnight-long initiative dedicated to raising awareness about cleanliness in offices, neighbourhoods, and cities. He said the campaign provides a great platform for citizens across the country to actively engage in cleanliness drives and develop a culture of hygiene.

"Today, it was heartening to see not only members of the Brahmaputra Board but also people from nearby areas participating enthusiastically, wearing awareness T-shirts and caps, and joining the procession. The presence of the local municipal councillor, Shri Ashish Bharali, further reinforced the commitment to the cause," stated Singh. He stressed cleanliness is key to aesthetic appeal, better hygiene and improved public health outcomes.

When asked about the economic impact of the Swachhata Pakhwada initiative, particularly in sectors like tourism and public health, Singh explained that culture of cleanliness directly benefits tourism. "If a place is unclean, tourists will not return, affecting the local economy and leading to job losses. By maintaining cleanliness, we can attract more visitors, boost tourism, and create employment opportunities, both through self-employment and organised sectors," said Singh.

Singh announced a new project aimed at revitalising the Basistha River, located near the Brahmaputra Board headquarters. He mentioned while it's currently a dumping ground, it would be transformed into a recreational spot within the next year.

"We have decided to completely transform the area, involving all stakeholders in the process. By next year’s Swachhata Pakhwada, we hope to showcase a fully restored and scenic Basistha River as a recreation space for the public," said Singh during the BNE interview.
