The 2024 Axomi Saras Mela will come to a close on December 15. Organized by the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM) and supported by NABARD, the mela features over 220 stalls, with around 90 representing exhibitors from outside Assam. Self-help groups (SHGs) and micro-entrepreneurs from various parts of Assam have also set up stalls at the ongoing mela at the Veterinary Field, Khanapara.
A workshop on 'Packaging and Branding of Rural Products' was also conducted apart from setting up stalls. Business North East (BNE) spoke to ASRLM's State Mission Director, Nibedan Das Patowary, who shared insights on the workshop.
"Self-Help Group members handle their own packaging and branding. However, we often notice errors or substandard practices in these areas. This workshop aims to help them improve and develop these skills," he said, adding that their primary goal is to showcase rural products to the community.
"This year, we chose the Veterinary Field to accommodate more SHG groups. We provide accommodation, food, and transportation so that members can focus solely on showcasing and selling their products," he told BNE.

Moreover, members from an SHG in Dibrugarh displayed Assamese cultural attire and food products, revealing that they have been participating in Saras Mela since 2021. "Our handloom unit is based in Sonapur, and we offer Assam Silk products such as Eri, Pat Silk, Muga Silk, and Tussar. So far, we have made over Rs 2 lakh in sales and are hopeful for more," one of the members said.
Axomi Saras Mela 2024 continues to provide a platform for rural artisans and entrepreneurs, bringing their unique creations closer to a larger audience.
