New Delhi : Air travelers may find cause for celebration this Diwali season as average airfares on several domestic routes have decreased by 20-25 percent compared to the same time last year, as per a study. The decrease in air ticket prices is attributed to the rise in capacity and the recent drop in oil prices. According to travel portal ixigo's analysis, airfares on domestic routes have decreased by approximately 20-25 percent. The fares shown are the average cost for one-way travel with a 30-day advanced purchase requirement.

In 2023, the timeframe under review is from November 10-16, whereas it is from October 28-November 3 for the current year. This is the period surrounding Diwali. The analysis shows that the average airfare for a Bengaluru-Kolkata flight has decreased by 38 per cent from Rs 10,195 last year to Rs 6,319 this year. The cost of tickets for the Chennai-Kolkata route has decreased by 36 pc, now priced at Rs 5,604 instead of Rs 8,725.

The airfare for flights between Mumbai and Delhi has decreased by 34 pc, now costing Rs 5,762 instead of Rs 8,788. In the same way, ticket prices on the Delhi-Udaipur route have seen a 34 per cent drop to Rs 7,469 from Rs 11,296. There has been a 32 percent decrease on routes from Delhi to Kolkata, Hyderabad to Delhi, and Delhi to Srinagar. "Airfares soared last year during Diwali because of a shortage in capacity, mainly caused by the grounding of Go First airline. "Yet this year, there has been some improvement with more seats available, resulting in a 20-25 percent decrease in average airfares on major routes compared to the same time last year," said Aloke Bajpai, CEO of ixigo Group, in an interview with PTI. He believes that the 15 percent drop in oil prices this year may have also played a role in this downward trend, giving travelers additional benefits
