Guwahati: Assam's traditional weave, gamusa or gamosa, receives a geographical indication (Gl) from the Government of India on Tuesday. The item will now be given legal protection to stop unauthorised usage.
The Institute of Handicraft Development in Assam's Golaghat district filed the application to the GI Registry of the "Gamusa" on October 16, 2017.
In the Assamese community, gamusa is regarded as one of the most distinctive cultural markers.
A geographical indication (GI) is a label or sign placed on goods that identify the origin or precise geographic location of the product.
