Guwahati: The tourist flow to Assam has seen a significant increase in the 2022-23 financial year compared to the previous year, with the Assam tourism department also reporting an increase in revenue collection.

In the 2022-23 financial year, Assam received a total of 98,31,141 tourists, out of which 18,946 were foreign tourists, marking a substantial increase compared to the previous financial year when the state had 17,02,932 tourists, including 1,231 foreign nationals, stated Assam tourism minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, in a written reply during the ongoing autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

However, the lower tourist numbers in 2021-22 were attributed to the ongoing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. As the pandemic situation improved, the tourist flow to the state increased.

The Assam tourism department collected revenue of over Rs. 2.64 crore in the 2022-23 financial year. In contrast, the revenue collected in the previous financial year was over Rs. 1.69 crore. This increase in revenue is likely a result of the higher number of tourists visiting Assam during the mentioned period, minister stated.

The tourism minister, Jayanta Malla Baruah, mentioned that there is a need for a descriptive analysis of the revenue generated by tourists' visits. The tourism department has not conducted such an analysis, but the minister provided the overall revenue collection figures for reference.
