Guwahati: The state government of Assam will invest Rs 72 crores in the upcoming Unity Mall project in the state's Betkuchi area, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said during the 'bhumi pujan' ceremony here. At the same time, the federal government will infuse Rs 226 crore into the project.
Sarma, in a social media post on platform X (formerly Twitter), stated that the Unity Mall project is "not just a shopping destination but a vision to establish Assam and other northeastern states as a business hub."
He highlighted that the mall aims to attract over 5.5 lakh visitors, fostering economic growth and providing a market for artisans, entrepreneurs, traditional businesses, and products under the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative.
What is the Unity Mall?
The Unity Mall project is a part of the 'Ek Bharat, Shresht Bharat' initiative to showcase and support indigenous, handcrafted, and Geographical Indication (GI) tagged products from Assam and other northeastern states. The project is designed to provide a platform for local artisans, entrepreneurs, and traditional businesses to thrive in a competitive market.
The complex will house 35 uniform-sized stalls for each state, featuring a diverse range of products. A key feature of Unity Mall includes a one-state emporium and another district emporium within the premises.
The space will serve as a display area for products and provide accommodation facilities.
In addition to the shopping experience, Unity Mall will have two auditoriums, providing a platform for discussions, cultural programs, and events.
Moreover, the Unity Mall complex will incorporate traditional food shops from Assam and other states, showcasing the rich culinary diversity of the region.
A section dedicated to successful 'Made in India' products, as well as an exclusive area for Assam's indigenous, handcrafted, and GI-tagged products, will further enhance the shopping experience.
The project is set to be completed within 15 months, with a targeted inauguration by next year. It was initiated in July last year.
