Guwahati: The Assam Secretariat has emerged as the country's inaugural civil secretariat powered entirely by solar energy after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a 2.5 MW solar power project at the complex.

Installed at a cost of  Rs 12.5 crore, the grid-connected rooftop solar power plant is projected to save Rs 30 lakh in electricity bills monthly. It is expected to generate an average of 3 lakh units of electricity per month, reducing carbon emissions by 3060 metric tonnes annually over its 25-year lifespan.

Chief Minister Sarma underscored the project's significance in Assam's journey towards green energy adoption, stressing the need for other government offices to follow suit. He announced plans for further solar initiatives across the state, aimed at reducing dependency on traditional energy sources.

The initiative aligns with broader state efforts, including upcoming solar projects in Namrup, Bharchalla, Khudigaon, and Karbi Anglong districts. These efforts are not only expected to enhance energy self-sufficiency but also contribute to environmental conservation.

Sarma also encouraged public participation in the 'PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Scheme,' promoting household adoption of solar panels to reduce electricity expenses by up to 85%.
