Guwahati: Recently, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that the work on a bridge that will connect Guwahati to the North Guwahati region, across the Brahmaputra river, “has achieved nearly 80% progress.”

In the same post, where he attached pictures of ongoing construction on the bridge, Biswa Sarma asserted that it “will be open to public on time.”

So what makes the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge over the Brahmaputra so special? Here are some key facts about this ongoing project that we think you should know:

According to the state government, this bridge will help “decongest” Guwahati and reduce the time to traverse the distance for city folk.

The state government has set a target of inaugurating the six-lane bridge-cum road project by Diwali, 2024.

This new project will be 8.4 km long with a 1.24 km bridge portion and is being built for Rs 2,608 crore.

After crossing the bridge from Guwahati, the road will be six lanes up to Gauripur in the Dhubri district of Assam.

As per reports, over 1,000 people are involved in the construction of this mammoth project.

The under-construction bridge is expected to drastically reduce the time taken to travel to the under-construction AIIMS and IIT, both situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra.

The construction work started in August 2019 with an initial deadline of August 2023.

The bridge is being developed under the Assam Bridge Project of the state's Public Works Department (PWD) by Haryana-based SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode.
