Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on August 9 decided that the government will rename and restructure the Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Department.

The department will now go by the name of the Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs Department. This change in the nomenclature is accompanied by a reorganisation of the department’s functions and responsibilities.

The Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs Department will play a crucial and central role in implementing the regulations outlined in the Food Security Rules. This involves overseeing and enforcing the control orders that are in place to regulate public distribution systems.

Further, the department is tasked with the formulation and execution of policies that are directly related to food security. Given that food security is a fundamental factor influencing the well-being of the state’s residents, this responsibility carries significant importance.

Operating under this new nomenclature, the department’s primary objective will revolve around ensuring that the citizens of Assam have unobstructed access to essential food items. To achieve this goal, the department will focus on establishing an efficient and transparent public distribution system.

This strategic move underlines the state government’s commitment to enhancing food security, as well as its dedication to facilitating the accessibility of essential food commodities for the people of Assam.
