Guwahati: The Assam government has signed an MoU with the policy think tank Pahle India Foundation to identify new areas of revenue generation and facilitate the study of possible developments in the districts of Assam, including identifying existing gaps and estimating the gross domestic product (GDP).

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the collaboration with Pahle India Foundation will help the district administrations across the state in identifying new sources of revenue at the district level, ultimately improving the overall GDP of the state.

The government's vision for economic growth focuses on district-led development, and this MoU aims to promote districts as the center of administration and economic growth in Assam. To achieve this vision, extensive research is required at the district level to estimate the District Gross Domestic Product, which will aid in the preparation of a district vision document.

"The District Commissioners (DCs) will play a crucial role in improving the GDP of their respective districts. They will focus on various aspects, including generating GST revenue, increasing per capita income, boosting power consumption, promoting industrial activity, diversifying agriculture, and creating an industrial land bank. The DCs will work with a holistic approach to enhance the functioning of all departments at the district level," Sarma said.

The MoU was signed between Assam's Additional Chief Secretary, Asish Bhutani, and Pahle India Foundation's Executive Director, Ravi Pokharna.

The MoU will guide the districts in bridging data gaps across the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors of the economy, enabling the compilation of District Domestic Product, Gross State Domestic Product, Gross Fixed Capital Formation, and Private Final Consumption Expenditure for the state.
