Assam, Nagaland make a mark at the Global Fisheries Conference

While Assam was adjudged the best state, Nagaland’s representative brought attention to the state’s promising fishery sector.

Guwahati: Assam was adjudged the best state in the Northeast at the Global Fisheries Conference that was held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in conjunction with the World Fisheries Day on November 21-22.

In Assam, Kamrup district was awarded the best district, and Nazrul Islam of Karimganj was awarded the best fish farmer award at the conference.

According to an official, the stall of the fisheries department of the government of Assam attracted the attention of the visitors. Three fisheries-based product manufacturers from Assam who joined the exhibition under the supervision of the state government were able to reap rich dividends.

Speaking to Business North East, a fishery department official said that 50 countries had been invited to the conference and a majority of them were present.

Fellow Northeastern state Nagaland was represented by Panjung Jamir, the advisor of fisheries and aquatic resources.

The advisor also participated in an international round table which was attended by representatives from different countries including ambassadors. “The advisor expressed that Nagaland being a hilly state with rivers, is blessed in ornamental and cold-water fisheries sector” stated an official release.

He stated that in Nagaland, new species are still being discovered in the rivers which needs to be further researched and more investment is needed to identify more ornamental fish. The advisor further emphasized that the state has abundant cold water fish like the mahseer, considered a major delicacy in the state. Jamir said that further investments are required to boost the production of the cold water fish sector in Nagaland.

The round table meeting concluded with an assurance that investment ventures in the state would be looked into.
