Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced the implementation of a world-class urban center project at Jagiroad near Guwahati, aiming to decongest the capital city and increase employment opportunities.

The proposed satellite township will cater to the needs of employees of the upcoming semiconductor plant and decongest the capital city. Jagiroad, situated next to Guwahati, is an upcoming tech-manufacturing hub and the best spot to establish a futuristic and sustainable city.

The Assam government will ensure the township is integrated with all amenities, providing seamless rail, road, and air connectivity. The Global City will accommodate thousands of employees working at the upcoming semiconductor unit. Earlier this year, Biswa Sarma unveiled the Rs 27,000 crore Tata semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, aiming to empower Northeast youths in AI and semiconductors. The project was approved by the central government in February.

To meet the demands of rapid urbanization and increment of population, Guwahati, the capital of Assam, is being extended to Jagiroad in the East and Palasbari in the West. Meanwhile, officials have prepared a draft for a Guwahati Master Plan 2045 which is "sustainable and futuristic," according to the CM. Posting on X (formerly Twitter) last year, the CM stressed that the plan will be implemented "on a holistic vision for connectivity, sanitation, sewerage, environment among others."
