Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation for a tourist centre named after Tiwa king Jongal Balahu in Nagaon district on Tuesday, at a cost of Rs 50 crore.

CM Sarma also announced a special scheme for the renovation and creation of the medieval era Tiwa King Jungal Balahu tourist centre in Nagaon.

Addressing a public meeting in Raha, Sarma praised the Tiwa community for its enormous contribution to enriching Assam's cultural mosaic.

He stated after the center's foundation stone laying ceremony at Jongal Balahu Rampart that the facility will help shed light on the community's role in building an inclusive society.

Earlier, the chief minister paid a visit to Raha's historic Jongal Balahu Garh and paid floral tributes to Tiwa king Jongal Balahu.

The archaeological site at Raha will be renamed Jongal Balahu Kshetra in honour of the great warrior and the Tiwa community as a whole.

"Among other things, the Rs 50-crore NABARD-funded project will include cycle and EV tracks, a hanging bridge, an amphitheatre, and a museum," he added.

The chief minister also sought public support for the construction of a two-lane approach road to the tourist centre.

Later that day, he attended a tourism festival in Digboi, Tinsukia district, and announced Rs 3 crore for the development of the Nazirating Tamuli tourism circuit's infrastructure.

"Like the Tawang festival in Arunachal Pradesh and the Cherry Blossom festival in Meghalaya, the Assam government intends to make the Nazirating Tamuli Tourism festival one of the state's most sought-after tourism events," he added.
