In a major push to boost the dairy sector in Assam, the state cabinet has approved the allotment of land to AMUL for establishing a modern dairy processing unit. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday.

As per the announcement, 20 bighas of land at the Institute of Farm Management campus in Rani, on the outskirts of Guwahati, will be leased to AMUL. The upcoming state-of-the-art dairy plant will have a processing capacity of 1 lakh litres per day. The estimated cost of the project is around ₹75 crore, which could potentially rise to ₹150 crore.

This facility is expected to directly benefit nearly 20,000 dairy farmers across the state. The initiative is part of the MoU signed between the Government of Assam and AMUL during the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit.

In another key decision, the cabinet approved the phased distribution of subsidized Masur dal, sugar, and salt to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The initiative will begin in selected districts from October 2025 and will be expanded across all districts by November 2025.

To offer greater flexibility and choice to consumers, each essential commodity will be made available in individual packets, allowing beneficiaries to buy them as per their needs.
