Assam: 200 fish producers attends workshop on quality fish seed production

Guwahati: More than 200 fish producers participated in the two day workshop on the quality fish seed production and management under the sponsorship of World Bank aided Assam Agri-business and Rural Transformation Project (APART) held at Indian Institute of Banking Management at Khanapara.

The two day workshop held on February 23-24, 2023 was graced by Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Fisheries as a chief guest.

Addressing the participants Suklabaidya, expressed his satisfaction for increasing the fish seed production trend in Assam and advised the concerns for minimizing the genetically degenerated poor quality fish seed production in the State. He also released a booklet Better Management Practice on Quality Fish Seed production for the benefit of the stakeholders.

Rakesh Kumar IAS, Commissioner of Fisheries suggested the participants to follow the Assam Fish Seed Act, 2005 and Assam Fish Seed Rules, 2010 which have adequate provisions to deal with problem for production of quality fish seed. He also stressed on awareness on the provisions.

Kabyashree Mahanta ACS, Secretary to Fisheries also highlighted the importance of availability of quality fish seed in the State for the benefit of the farmers.

“The state is having vast water resources for taking up fish production to meet its demand as well as to export fish to other neighboring states. But unless, the quality of seed is improved, the efforts for higher farm productivity will not give desired result”, she added.

Dr S. K. Das, Principal Scientist of ICAR-NEH, Barapani explained in details the production strategy, recent advances of Aquaculture and the Fish Seed Certification and Accreditation System which is essential to go for introduction of fish seed certification in the state.

Earlier, Dr Dhruba Jyoti Sharma, Nodal Officer, APART (Fishery) explained the aims and objectives of the programme and he anchored the two days workshop.
