Guwahati: The Ambubachi Mela, an annual festival held at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam, started on June 22 and will end on June 25. The event will have strict guidelines for visitors, including no VIP passes, road closures, and strict food and water distribution regulations.

This year, camp facilities will be provided at Kamakhya Railway Station and Pandu Port, with capacities ranging from 5000 to 2000 persons. According to officials, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) will maintain street lighting and ensure the cleaning of the temple, camps, and surrounding areas. The Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) will provide toilets, bio-toilets, and bathrooms in all camps, Kamakhya foothills, and Kamakhya hilltop.

Barricades will be arranged at certain locations, and carpet will be provided for pedestrians. Shoe stalls will be constructed at Nilachal Flyover, Maligaon, and Bangshibagan on the way to Kamakhya Temple via Pandu Road. At the same time, health camps will be set up in all camps, Kamakhya foothills, and Kamakhya hilltop, and a mini ambulance service will be arranged in case of emergencies.

PWD (Electrical) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) will provide lighting in all major routes and link roads, ensuring adequate and uninterrupted power supply during the Mela period.

It is believed that the presiding goddess of the temple, Devi Kamakhya, the Mother Shakti, goes through her annual cycle of menstruation during this time stretch.  It is the most important festival of the Kamakhya temple and is celebrated during monsoons (Aahar month in the Assamese calendar).
