Guwahati: Jonali Chakraborty, an entrepreneur from Assam, has transformed adversity into a thriving eco-friendly business, gaining recognition across her community and beyond. In 2021, Jonali Chakraborty, who hails from a small village Basugaon in Assam's Chirang district, ventured into a new area after training with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and the local municipal board in vermicomposting.
While speaking to Business North East, Jonali Chakraborty said, "I Started my journey in 2019 with a small business in traditional attire funded by a self-help group loan." The entrepreneur further said that a severe setback occurred when her store was robbed, leaving her business in ruins. Undeterred, she vowed to rebuild and come back stronger."
“On October 2, I officially launched my vermicompost business, which focuses on collecting household waste, producing compost, and supporting local farmers in adopting sustainable practices,” she further revealed during the interview. Since then, Jonali Chakraborty's vermicomposting business has flourished, producing over 200 quintals of compost in 2024 alone.
Today, Jonali Chakraborty not only runs a successful vermicomposting enterprise but also manages an incense stick unit. Her efforts have created employment opportunities for five women and supported 15 local nurseries. Her commitment to eco-friendly agriculture has made her an inspiration in the community, empowering farmers to adopt green practices. With her venture, she manages to earn Rs. 2 lakh a year.
