Guwahati: GIAL, a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest approximately Rs. 6,100 crores in phased infrastructure and facility enhancements for Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) between 2023 and 2027. This investment will fund the construction of a New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) and significant airside developments, including runway extension, parallel taxiways, link taxiways, rapid exit taxiways, apron expansions, and an isolation bay.
GAU, the busiest airport in Northeast India, is expected to handle over 9 million passengers by 2027. Currently, the terminal, T1, was designed for an annual capacity of 2 million passengers but managed to accommodate 5.96 million passengers in FY24, significantly surpassing its capacity.
To address this surge, GIAL's plans include supporting cargo operations with interim facilities and an Integrated Cargo Complex, alongside constructing a new fuel farm. Embracing technology, the airport will introduce initiatives like DigiYatra and Passenger Wi-Fi.
In alignment with environmental sustainability goals, GIAL is committed to transitioning towards eco-friendly systems and processes. This includes deploying electric vehicles, replacing high GWP refrigerants with lower alternatives, and launching environmental campaigns and social awareness programs.
