Guwahati: Assam State Transport Corporation is set to launch 100 CNG stations as part of an initiative to reduce pollution levels. Previously, the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) was 14.5 percent, but it has been reduced by 5 percent, bringing it down to 9.5 percent.

"This decision aims to lower CNG prices and encourage more people to switch to CNG vehicles, contributing to a cleaner environment" stated cabinet minister Keshab Mahanta at the Lok Seva Bhavan on July 18.

Dibrugarh was the first district in Assam to start operating its CNG filling station in Chowkidingee. With the opening of CNG stations in Dibrugarh operated by Assam Gas Company, the state has become the second state in the Northeast after Tripura to get a CNG filling station.

"We have sufficient land for the construction of the CNG stations", chairman of Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) Mission Ranjan Das. "CNG will be provided by Oil India Limited”. The Indian government actively promotes CNG vehicles through subsidies and infrastructure development. The government is seeking to boost CNG, PNG infrastructure with 17,500 stations and 120 million connections by 2030, according to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
