Beijing: China is poised to see its air passenger travel reach unprecedented levels in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic figures. According to Song Zhiyong, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), passenger flights may hit 700 million this year, marking a significant milestone for the country's aviation sector.

Speaking at the Asia Pacific Summit for Aviation Safety, Song highlighted that the first half of 2024 already saw a nine percent increase in passenger trips compared to the same period in 2019, underscoring a robust recovery from the impacts of COVID-19. The State Council of China added that this growth trajectory is set to continue, with this year's projected figures exceeding the 619.6 million trips recorded in 2023.

China’s booming domestic travel market, which saw a 47.4 percent surge in tourism revenues during the Lunar New Year holidays, has been a major driver of this rebound. The increase in international travel, spurred by global events like the Paris Olympic Games, and strong demand for flights to destinations such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Europe, has further fueled the recovery.

The resurgence of Chinese tourists has also contributed to growth in the broader Asia-Pacific travel sector, highlighting China’s pivotal role in the region's aviation industry.
