Guwahati: The regional office of the Coconut Development Board here celebrated World Coconut Day on September 2 at Momai Tamuli Auditorium Hall, Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, in Khanapara.
Subrata Roy Bardhan, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, was the chief guest of the programme.
The significance of the World Coconut Day celebration is to commemorate the formation of the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), which includes 20 countries. The major producers are India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Mexico and Vietnam.
An exhibition was organised to display handicrafts and food items. A coconut food competition was also held on this occasion and there were 20 participants.
Dr Govindaswamy Kadirvel, Director of Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ICAR-ATARI), Rajiv Ashok, Managing Director, NERAMAC, Guwahati, Nabin Kumar Roy, General Manager, NABARD and other dignitaries were present in the World Coconut Day Celebration.
