Guwahati: The ‘Vivanta’, a 5-star hotel in Guwahati, Assam is planning to go the green route after opening its very own in-house bottling plant.

“With this the hotel reinforces its commitment towards sustainable business practices by replacing all plastic water bottles with reusable glass water bottles, bottled with treated water,” a spokesperson for the hotel, located in the Khanapara area of the Assam capital, said. He estimated that the move “will avoid the use of 6 lakh plastic bottles per year.”

“We are committed to zero single use plastics .Vivanta Guwahati has yet again set a benchmark in transitioning to a more sustainable Assam,” Jayanta Das, area director and general manager of Vivanta, said at an event held to announce the move on Thursday.

The hotel said it is promoting water conservation and waste reduction by efficiently treating and using water, reducing waste generation, and promoting recycling.

It is also promoting EV charging stations, use of low flow aerators for taps and showers, usage of treated water for horticulture and flushing and the use of LED light energy-efficient motors .

The Vivanta is owned and operated by the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) group which has a portfolio of 214 hotels across 12 countries and in over 100 locations.

The hotel’s move comes in the wake of the Assam government’s announcement that it would ban the production and use of drinking water bottles made of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) of less than 1 litre in volume from October 2 this year. However, 500 ml bottles are still in mass circulation, with many restaurants and eateries continuing to sell those to customers. The manufacture, stock, sale and purchase of single-use plastic was banned by the state government last year.
