New Delhi: On 15th October 2024, Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan will unveil the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to Healthcare, Agriculture, and Sustainable Cities. The announcement will take place in New Delhi, marking a significant step toward advancing India's technological and innovation landscape.

These centres, aligned with the "Viksit Bharat" vision, will be led by top educational institutions in collaboration with industry partners and startups. They aim to drive interdisciplinary research, develop cutting-edge applications, and deliver scalable solutions in the fields of healthcare, agriculture, and urban sustainability. The initiative supports India's broader goal to "Make AI in India and Make AI work for India."

Approved as part of the 2023-24 Budget under Para 60, the centres will operate with a financial outlay of Rs. 990 crore for FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28. They will serve as hubs for fostering an AI-driven ecosystem and nurturing talent in key sectors critical to India's growth and development.

An Apex Committee, featuring prominent industry figures such as Dr. Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, has been established to oversee the initiative's implementation. K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary of Higher Education, along with IIT Directors, heads of higher educational institutions (HEIs), and industry leaders, will attend the event. This collaboration aims to propel India's AI capabilities and position the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence innovation.
