New Delhi: The tea industry had mixed reactions to the 2024-25 budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament on Tuesday.

The Tea Association of India (TAI), a prominent organization representing producers, expressed appreciation for the Pradhan Mantri Shramik Protsahan Yojana (PMCSPY) aimed at benefiting tea workers, particularly women and children in Assam and West Bengal.

Sujit Patra, Secretary of the Tea Auctioneers Association (ATA), stated that it seems there are no provisions for the tea industry in the 2024-25 budget. TAI mentioned that Rs 1000 crore has been allocated by the government to implement the scheme, which focuses on providing necessary support in tea growing regions to improve education and health services for the workers.

According to TAI, the suggestions for enhancing resilience in the agricultural sector will benefit the tea industry. The government has placed particular focus on the importance of creating jobs and providing training, which will greatly benefit the tea industry, as per the association. The tea industry has been consistently requesting the development of digital and banking infrastructure in tea growing regions for many years.
