New Delhi: UltraTech Cement Limited has announced it has conserved 105 million cubic meters of water in the fiscal year 2024, marking a fivefold increase in water positivity for the company.
The conservation efforts encompass incorporating water reuse, recycling, harvesting, and recharge initiatives both within its operational units and through community-driven interventions, the company said in a statement. This notable accomplishment reflects an increase of over 20 million cubic meters of water conserved compared to the previous fiscal year.
UltraTech said it also focuses on enriching lives and livelihoods through watershed management approaches and community-centric initiatives. The establishment of Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plants at several manufacturing units underscores its dedication to water resource management.
Furthermore, the company's sustainability agenda encompasses key areas such as decarbonisation, energy transition, circular economy, biodiversity management, and safe operations. Notably, UltraTech has made substantial progress in reducing its net CO2 emission intensity, achieving a decrease from 632 kg/tonne of cementitious products in 2017 to 556 kg/tonne in FY24, it said.
UltraTech has pledged to refrain from further investment in thermal power capacity, signalling a shift towards reducing fossil fuel dependency and embracing renewable energy sources. As part of its RE100 commitment, the company has significantly increased its renewable energy capacity and Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) capacity, with current capacities reaching 612 MW and 278 MW, respectively.
Moreover, UltraTech has demonstrated its commitment to circularity by utilizing over 33 million tonnes of recycled and alternative raw materials in cement production during FY24. Additionally, the adoption of the Miyawaki afforestation method underscores its efforts to enhance green cover at manufacturing sites.
