Agartala: Tripura is set to witness a significant boost in its bamboo industry with the establishment of a new Integrated Bamboo Park in Chandipur block, Kailashahar of Tripura’s Unakoti District.

A Tripura Industry and Commerce Department official told Business North East (BNE) that this ambitious project, which falls under the Tripura Bamboo Mission Bamboo Value Chain Development initiative, is estimated to cost Rs 162 crore 92 lakh and will require over 40 acres of land. “The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been submitted to the central government, and work will commence upon final approval”, said the official.

Tripura has been a pioneer in bamboo-based industries, with India’s first bamboo park established in 2007 at RK Nagar, West Tripura District.

“Developed with financial assistance from the Ministry of Industries and Commerce and managed by the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation, the RK Nagar Bamboo Park has successfully nurtured small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in bamboo-based production. These industries manufacture a range of products, including bamboo tiles for flooring, incense sticks, bamboo waste processing materials, and bamboo powder. The success of this initiative has inspired the establishment of similar parks across the country”, said the official.

According to the official, the upcoming Integrated Bamboo Park in Kailashahar will revolutionise the bamboo industry in Tripura. Describing the project, he said that the park will host various bamboo-based production units and focus on the optimum utilisation of bamboo resources. Infrastructure development within the park will include road networks, electricity facilities, industrial sheds, and the installation of state-of-the-art equipment. Additionally, a dedicated unit for utilising bamboo waste as raw material will ensure maximum efficiency and sustainability.

“Innovative industrial units will be set up within the proposed bamboo park, including the production of activated charcoal from bamboo, biodegradable utensils made by blending bamboo waste with plastic, and eco-friendly bamboo fibre cups. To ensure a steady supply of raw materials, 26 bamboo primary processing units cum aggregation centres will be established in bamboo-rich regions of North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, and West Tripura districts”, he told this publication.
Strategically located near National Highway 208, the bamboo park will have excellent connectivity, being just 20 km from Kumarghat Railway Station in Tripura.

This prime location will facilitate the easy transportation of finished products to various markets, boosting trade and commerce.
Once operational, the project is expected to create numerous employment opportunities, benefiting local artisans, entrepreneurs, and workers engaged in the bamboo industry.
