Tripura Tea Development Corporation Records Rs 10 Crore Loss Over Two Years

Agartala: The Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited (TTDCL), which operates two major tea processing factories in the state, Durgabari and Brahmakunda under West Tripura District, has recorded a cumulative loss of over Rs 10 crore in the last two financial years.

A report from the TTDCL said that the Central Tea Processing Factory, Durgabari, under Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited, was established in 1990, and the Brahmakunda Tea Processing Factory, Simna, was established in 2015. The production capacity of these two factories is 10 lakh kg (5 lakh kg each).

“There are also five more tea gardens under Tripura Tea Development Corporation. Kamalasagar Tea Garden under Sepahijala District started in 1984, and the total area of the tea garden is 280 acres. In 2024, 44,077 kg of raw tea leaves were produced.

In Brahmakunda Tea Garden of West District, which started its journey in 1986, the total area of the tea garden is 200 acres, and in 2024, 565,765 kg of raw tea leaves were produced. Maasmara Tea Garden is 200 acres, and in 2024, around 565,765 kg of raw tea leaves were produced. Laxmilunga Tea Garden, in July 2022, as per the order of the state government, was brought under the Tripura Tea Development Corporation to provide Interim Management Support only. Similarly, Tufanialunga Tea Garden, in July 2022, as per the order of the state government, was brought under the Tripura Tea Development Corporation to provide Interim Management Support only.

“The factories of Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited usually process the raw leaves of these tea gardens. For example, in the Corporation's Central Tea Processing Factory located in Durgabari, the leaves of the Corporation's Kamalasagar Tea Garden are brought and processed. In addition, raw tea leaves are purchased from small tea gardens, cooperative-run tea gardens, and privately owned tea gardens in the area near Durgabari, and these leaves are processed.

Similarly, in the Brahmakunda Tea Processing Factory of the Corporation, leaves are brought from the Brahmakunda Tea Garden of the Corporation and are processed. In addition, raw tea leaves are purchased here from small tea gardens and tea gardens owned by various individuals in the area near this Brahmakunda Tea Processing Factory, and these are processed,” the report stated.

It said that the tea produced from the above tea processing factories is not sold directly but is sold through some of the Corporation's own tea sales centers and through the Kolkata and Guwahati tea auction centers.

“The profit and loss of each of these two tea factories is not calculated separately, but the profit and loss of Tripura Tea Development Corporation is regularly calculated. The year-wise profit and loss of this Tripura Tea Development Corporation is: in the 2022-23 financial year, Rs 4 crore 96 lakh 69 thousand 167 loss, and in 2023-24, Rs 5,08,60,711 financial year loss, while the profit and loss for the 2024-25 financial year has not yet been calculated,” the report said.
