Guwahati: Tripura will invest over Rs 23 crore to install eco-friendly furnaces in cremation grounds in all 21 urban local bodies of the state, the government said in a release on Tuesday.
According to a senior official of the urban development department in Tripura, the envisioned furnaces will be powered by electricity. Previously, the state only had electrical cremation facilities at the Battala cremation ground in Agartala, the capital city.
An official said that the project will be implemented at a cost of Rs 23.36 crore, with each site to be built on a sum of Rs1.1 crore.
Officials said that this project is being implemented as “electricity-based crematoriums are environmentally friendly.” “This project will ensure that the deceased person's journey to the afterlife does not face any hurdles,” added the release.
In December of 2022, the Gauhati High Court received a petition seeking the installation of electrical or LPG crematoriums in Assam.
Subsequently, the court directed all the concerned departments to make preparations to set up electric crematoriums in a phased manner. These crematoriums are expected to be installed in all district headquarters.
