Training on Food Safety given to food street vendors of Nagaland

Dimapur: The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), with the support of the Food Safety Authority in Nagaland, has launched a project called 'Project Serve Safe Food: Training of Street Food Vendors' in Kohima. The primary aim of this project is to provide training to street food vendors in Kohima, Nagaland, on food safety and hygiene practices.

Subrata Banerjee, the head of the branch corporate affairs of Nestle India Ltd, mentioned that Nestle India has been collaborating with NASVI and local food authorities since 2016 to ensure proper training for street food vendors. The goal is not only to guarantee the safety of food for consumers but also to help vendors improve their livelihoods. The training program covers various modules, including personal hygiene, cart hygiene, food handling and safety, cleaning, pest control, and garbage disposal.

As street food vendors have been increasing in Kohima and Dimapur, it's crucial for them to adopt safe hygiene practices. The training is designed to boost the confidence and competence of street food vendors in their businesses.

Kohima Municipal Council administrator Lanusenla L Peseyie emphasized the importance of street vendors acquiring the necessary knowledge about food safety and hygiene practices and obtaining a food safety training certificate, which is essential for operating their stalls.

Assistant Food Safety Commissioner Sendong Jamir highlighted some key points, such as the need for vendors to be registered under the FACCI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), display their registration papers at their stalls, use proper utensils for serving food, and avoid reusing cooking oil. These measures are essential to ensure the safety of the food they serve to customers.
