Guwahati: To bolster the fishery sector in Assam Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Sharma, Managing Director of Fishfed urged the premier institute to continue enriching farmers with modern technologies during the inauguration of a three-day training programme on genetically improved fish stock for aquaculture'.
Sharma also urged the trainees to leverage the expertise of the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE).
The three-day training programme on 'Genetically Improved Fish Stock for Aquaculture' concluded on December 20, 2023, at the Aquaculture Field School of Kalong-Kapili in Bogibari, near Sonapur. The event, sponsored by the Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), Mumbai, a world-renowned fishery research and education organization, took place under the Department of Fisheries, in collaboration with Fishfed and 'Kalong-Kapili,' marking a significant stride in enhancing aquaculture practices in Assam.
The program, inaugurated on December 18, saw the participation of 30 progressive fish farmers from the scheduled caste community, forming the unit 'Kalong-Kapili.'
Genetic improvement in aquaculture species holds the potential to significantly enhance production. Through selective breeding, strains of species can be developed that exhibit faster growth, increased disease resistance, and other favorable characteristics for aquaculture. The training program aimed to enrich participants' knowledge of genetically improved fish stock for more effective aquaculture practices.
The inauguration on December 18 saw Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Sharma emphasizing the importance of the program, and acknowledging the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved.
The event saw the collaborative efforts of key players in the fisheries sector and their commitment to advancing aquaculture practices through the dissemination of modern technologies and knowledge, according to a release. The overall aim of the training program was to empower fish farmers with the latest advancements in aquaculture, contributing to the overall development of the fishery sector in Assam, it added.
