Toyota: Toyota Motor Corp. reported a decline in its quarterly operating profit for the first time in two years, as the company faces challenges adjusting to the global market's growing shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). According to reports, Toyota’s revenue reached 11.44 trillion yen, slightly surpassing analyst expectations of 11.41 trillion yen for the quarter. However, its operating profit fell to 1.16 trillion yen, falling short of the anticipated 1.24 trillion yen, reflecting a 20 percent drop compared to the previous year.

The automaker has been cautious in its approach to fully battery-powered electric vehicles. Toyota’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, recently expressed concerns about the future of the industry under an “electric-vehicle-only” scenario. He warned that such a shift could lead to significant job losses, particularly in engine-related roles. Toyoda emphasised that 5.5 million people work within Japan’s automotive sector, many of whom have long been involved in engine production.

Despite the profit drop, Toyota reaffirmed its full-year operating profit forecast of 4.3 trillion yen. The company also continues to grapple with challenges such as vehicle recalls. In September, Toyota announced the recall of 42,000 vehicles due to a potential issue with the power brake assist system, which could affect stopping distances in certain 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid models.

In June, Toyota's market value dropped by over 15 billion dollars after Japan’s Transport Ministry discovered that some automakers, including Toyota, had used falsified data in certifying vehicle models. The investigation also uncovered irregularities in certifications by Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha.
