Austin: Tesla has ceased taking orders for the 61,000 dollars version of its Cybertruck, instead prioritising the 100,000 dollars model, which is now available for immediate purchase with delivery possible as soon as this month, according to the company's website.

The Cybertruck's demand and production are under intense scrutiny by both investors and Tesla enthusiasts. CEO Elon Musk has heavily invested in the vehicle’s development, with plans to produce 200,000 units annually. In October, Musk revealed that Tesla had accumulated 1 million reservations for the truck, though some potential buyers are holding out for less expensive versions, as current prices are higher and driving ranges lower than originally promised.

Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst at Guidehouse Insights, told Reuters that the decision to stop offering the lower-priced version suggests demand is significantly lower than the previously reported million reservations.

In July, Tesla sold nearly 4,800 Cybertrucks, marking its best month yet and making it the top-selling vehicle in the U.S. priced over 100,000 dollars, according to Cox Automotive. To date, over 16,000 Cybertrucks have been sold, but maintaining high sales volumes at such a price point could prove challenging, a Cox spokesperson noted.

Deliveries of the Cybertruck began in November 2023 after several years of delays and a challenging production ramp-up. Originally, Musk had projected in 2019 that the truck would be priced at 40,000 dollars and offer a 500-mile range on a single charge.

Tesla’s website no longer lists the 61,000 dollars Cybertruck, which was previously available with a 250-mile range and an expected delivery date in 2025. Now, customers can purchase the 99,990 dollars dual-motor variant with a 318-mile range for delivery as early as this month, or the 119,990 dollars tri-motor Cyberbeast with a 301-mile range, available from October.

Abuelsamid added that Tesla currently holds a significant inventory of the dual-motor and tri-motor trucks, indicating a potential supply surplus.
