Tech Brew National Hackathon 2024 propels innovation in tea secctor

Guwahati: The Tea Research Association (TRA) at Tocklai celebrated the successful conclusion of the Tech Brew National Hackathon 2024, held on the occasion of International Tea Day.

As per reports, five teams were shortlisted from the initial round, with participants tasked to address critical challenges within the tea industry. Three winning teams emerged from the final round.

Team Orthodox from Jorhat Institute of Science & Technology secured first place with their autonomous drone equipped with hyperspectral cameras and sensors. This drone autonomously detects pest infestations and crop stress, offering a sustainable pest control solution by utilising local plants and weeds to create pest-deterring smoke.

Team Neurolingua from PSG Institute of Science and Applied Research, Coimbatore, secured second place with their innovative AI and IoT solution. Their system utilizes ultrasonic waves, neem oil, and garlic water to repel pests, complemented by UV lights and real-time data analytics for effective pest management.

Team Doodle, also from PSG Institute of Science and Applied Research, Coimbatore, clinched third place with their specialized model for tea pest detection. Leveraging machine learning and minimal hardware, their solution ensures precise and timely pest monitoring, emphasizing sustainability and precision agriculture.

TRA Secretary, Joydeep Phukan, commended the hackathon as a platform for young innovators to address real-world challenges in the tea sector. He expressed confidence in the transformative potential of the solutions presented, foreseeing a future of sustainability and growth for the Indian tea industry.
